Lubbock Family Front Porch Session
During these times, people across the world have been forced to pivot and adapt to a “new normal.” And while there is plenty resulting from this pandemic that lacks a lot to be desired, I must say that I’m not sad about all of the changes. For one, I have begun shooting families in front of their homes at a distance. What I’m finding is these sessions are going spectacularly well and here’s why.
1. Everyone is less stressed
Getting everyone dressed in their coordinating outfits and to a location on time is just stressful. There is a heck of a lot of work that goes on behind the scene, typically carried out by mom. But Dad isn’t exempt in so far as he’ll hear about it for weeks if the photos don’t turn out good because little Timmy cried the whole session. And let’s not forget that making sure everyone has a snack beforehand helps to make sure they’re in good spirits. Depending on the age of the kiddos, a nap goes a long way as well, but not too much or too little mind you. But when you’re at home, there’s no traveling, snacks are a step away, and kids are in their element.
2. The kids have a great time
There is just something about being at home, in your own element, that is relaxing! I cannot tell you how many kids I’ve photographed in the last few weeks that are usually shy or slow to warm up that are literally BEAMING when I drive up. They’re so excited to show off their new outfit in their own front yard that they’ve helped pick up earlier in the afternoon. Not to mention they can bring their toys as props or go inside to grab a snack really quick. Win-win, y’all!
3. Dad gets to show off his hard work
Believe it or not, but Dad really likes to show off his landscaping handy work! All those projects and honey-do’s that have been sitting on the back burner suddenly come together. The grass is looking great and the landscaping is blooming because they’re ready for their close up.
4. Mom gets to enjoy herself
All the little tiny details that go into preparing for a portrait and lifestyle session are at the ready! Snacks nearby, change of outfit available if needed, hot curling iron, plenty of hairspray, shoes optional, and no carseats involved. So pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy the next 30 minutes.
5. this is history in the making
If anything, this collective and forced pause has reminded us once again what makes life worth living: family, friends, connection. So let’s document the heck out of this time. Because when it all comes together… it’s magical.
